AviList Updates

On June 11 2025 the first version of the AviList was formally launched. You can download the list from the AviList website here: The Checklist v2025.

AviList Core Team. 2025. AviList: The Global Avian Checklist, v2025. https://doi.org/10.2173/avilist.v2025

The list will be updated once a year.

From 2026 onwards, all eBooks in the All the World’s Birds (ATWB) series of companion guides will use the AviList as the primary source of information about taxonomy, English names and scientific names. Previously, the World Bird List published by the International Ornithological Congress (IOC) was the basis for the content of these eBooks.

In the years leading up to 2025, the IOC bird list was updated twice a year. The most recent version of the IOC bird list to be incorporated into ATWB eBooks is Version 14.2, published August 21 2024.

Gill F, D Donsker & P Rasmussen  (Eds). 2024. IOC World Bird List (v14.2). doi :  10.14344/IOC.ML.14.2.

The following is a summary of the changes that have been made to ATWB companion guides in order to comply with the first version of the AviList. Changes have been made down to species level. Alongside the Checklist, the AviList Core Team has provided a register of corrections, v2025 errata, which can be found here. The corrections that are available at the time of publication will be incorporated into the ATWB 2026 series of Companion Guides and are reflected in the summary of changes below.

[Note: changes are those pertaining to ‘known to be extant’ species and are listed in the taxonomic sequence of AviList v2025]

Currently, information on this page is available only for ‘known to be extant’ Non-Passerine and Suboscine Passerine species, plus the first 1655 ‘known to be extant’ Oscine Passerine species.
