All the World’s Birds Companion Guides

The understanding of bird species and how they are grouped into families has changed rapidly since the introduction of DNA analysis. So much so that it is difficult to keep up with all the newly identified species and revisions to interrelationships of families.

The aim of the All the World’s Birds series of eBooks is to help birders and bird lovers gain a better appreciation of these changes. Together these eBooks will provide a Companion Guide to all the world’s bird species. With the exception of the Part-by-Part series, ATWB eBooks are published on Amazon as Kindle eBooks.

To see all the currently available titles in these series, search in the Books or Kindle Store section of your local Amazon site for ATWB. Or, click here to see all ATWB titles on Amazon US; or here to see all ATWB titles on Amazon UK.

ATWB Online enables you to browse the content of ATWB guides. To access the ATWB Online portal click here. Be sure to read the INTRODUCTION to ATWB Online before browsing for the first time. It explains how the content that is presented online differs in its FUNCTIONALITY from a Kindle eBook.

Since the 2025 editions ATWB Companion Guides were published, the first version of The Global Avian Checklist has been released. All eBooks in the series of ‘All the World’s Birds’ Companion Guides are now being modified to use the AviList as the primary source of information about taxonomy, English names and scientific names. Previously, the World Bird List published by the International Ornithological Congress (IOC) was the basis for the content of these eBooks.

The PART-BY-PART series of ATWB eBooks presents information about all ‘known to be extant’ bird species that appear in the AviList, divided into twelve parts. For more information and a list of all currently available titles click here.

Throughout the 2025 series of ATWB Companion Guides, the English names and scientific names of birds are derived from The IOC World Bird List, an open access resource published by the IOC (now known as the International Ornithological Committee). The IOC bird list is hosted on a dedicated World Bird Names website, which provides access to the list in various different formats.

In the years leading up to and including 2024, the IOC bird list was updated twice a year.

The version of the IOC bird list that is used in 2025 editions of ATWB eBooks is Version 14.2, published August 21 2024.
